Putting the squeeze on Acidosis – Give your cows the digestive edge!

The P1 program has been developed in response to industry changes in the way we are feeding dairy cattle.  The following paragraphs will briefly outline

  1. How today’s feeding regimes are impacting on rumen health and overall cow health and productivity.
  2. How the P1 program will help dairy cattle exploit today’s highly productive feed regimes while optimising rumen health and overall cow health.

Plant breeding technology has significantly improved the digestibility of grasses for grazing, silage and hay.  Higher quality forages combined with increasing amounts of starch (grain) is providing a ration to cows that from feed test is lower in NDF, higher in digestibility and metabolisable energy.  (Lower NDF indicates lower crude fibre).

aHighly digestible feed rations are rapidly fermented in the rumen for faster energy to the cow.  While this is increasing milk production, the rumen health and overall health of the cow is becoming increasingly challenged.  This cause-effect relationship between highly digestible rations and rumen pH status of the cow, is the main factor of concern.

Energy is the number one limiting factor in dairy cow rations.  Increasing energy through adding grain (starch) to the ration is a double edge sword.  While the producer will potentially receive production increases, often this comes at the cost of reduced rumen and cow health.  By adopting the P-One Program, producers can increase grain without problems such as acidosis and lameness.

The P-One Program represents the latest in microbial technology to manage rumen ph stability in the cow.  The P-One Program is about increasing digestive function and helping the cow utilise energy correctly.  This means a significant reduction in subacute or clinical acidosis, ketosis, laminitis, low components, DA’s and reproductive challenges.

The P-One Program involves two parts.  The product ‘DCP’ is fed at 28 grams per head per day initially for 2 weeks to seed or inoculate the rumen.  DCP contains the Propionibacterium strain which is a lactic acid utilizer.  Once the rumen is seeded, the program is maintained by feeding the product ‘Priority One’ on a daily basis at a rate of 28 grams per head per day.  Priority One contains the Lactic Acid Bacteria strains A2020 and A4000h.

The P1 Program is pioneering the next generation of digestive technology.  The P-One Program is proven technology you can rely upon to maintain a stable properly functioning rumen when feeding today’s highly productive feed rations.
