Cobalt Dextro Lac® (CDL) is a soluble non toxic cobalt feed additive available in liquid and powder forms. Liquid CDL® can be conveniently mixed into the cattle drinking water. The powder form can be mixed with grain, coarse salt (loose lick) or incorporated into a salt lick block.

University and field tested in many countries, CDL has been proven to improve utilization of dry feed. CDL supplies cobalt in the proper form to energize rumen bacteria so that they can not only digest more dry feed but also break it down further. This means your cattle are extracting more energy out of your paddock feed – that’s what we mean by better utilization of dry feed. Improved utilization of dry feed will save you money!

It is important to remember that with CDL that you are not feeding the cow, but rather the bugs inside its rumen. The rumen bacteria are the digestive agents which break down dry feed into simple sugars (energy) so that it can be absorbed by the cow. By energizing and increasing the bacterial population within the rumen you enhance digestion, improve dry feed utilization and dry matter intake (DMI).

Bacterial activity in the rumen can drop under heat stress. This means that cattle will tend to back off feed and in extreme situations they will stop eating. CDL® will help cattle under heat stress by energizing rumen bacteria so that they are more heat tolerant and consequently help keep the cow eating. CDL® will help cattle cope with stress through the role of vitamin B12 in the rumen. A cow that continues to eat dry feed under stressful environmental conditions will be happier, stronger and less prone to getting sick.

Australian beef farmers have seen and immediate response in appetite stimulation for dry feed. This appetite stimulation is further highlighted under stressful hot conditions. Within days of including liquid CDL® in the water, farmers note that cattle are spending more time grazing dry fee and less time standing around showing symptoms of heat stress.

CDL® has been scientifically proven to help lactating beef and dairy cows lose less weight in the early lactation. This is because CDL® is helping the cow indirectly by improving the efficiency of the rumen to digest more energy from roughage. Improved digestion of dry feed (roughage) will also assist with milk production. More milk for the calf translates to bigger calves at weaning time. We suggest to wean heavier stronger calves earlier and get the calf’s rumen adapted sooner to digesting dry feed efficiently. The use of CDL® in the cow/calf operation will ultimately mean less stress, more energy digested from dry feed resulting in more milk and more beef.

What is CDL?
CDL is a hormone free trace mineral feed supplement for beef and dairy cattle that contains a uniquely complexed form of cobalt. CDL works in the rumen to enhance the bio-availability of cobalt.

CDL® is created via a truly unique bio-fermentation processing of cobalt. A series of proprietary manufacturing processes are used to separate the cobalt from the carbonate molecule and link it to a polysaccharide molecule creating a nutrient product linked to a mild carbohydrate base. The term Dextro-Lac® is used to convey the process and resulting product. CDL® contains no living bacteria, but does contain nutrient rich fermentation by-products and a completely non-toxic form of cobalt resulting from the Dextro-Lac process.

What does CDL do?
CDL’s unique formulation of cobalt helps rumen micro-organisms synthesize vitamin B12. Extensive university research has demonstrated the following results:

35% increase in vitamin B12 in the rumen fluid
20% increase in volatile fatty acid in the rumen fluid
35% increase in blood plasma glucose levels

CDL® specifically targets the “base level” bacteria, the B12 synthesizers.

What does CDL do for your herd?
